Relationship Stress
Relationships can be tricky to manage, and often bring a great deal of stress trying to juggle everything at once. Whether it be a friendship you're trying to maintain, a quarrel with a family member, or a romantic partner, these relationships can become sources of stress in your life when you do not know how to deal with them.
Common Causes
- Lack of communication
- Miscommunications of goals or expectations
- Trickled over or built up stress from other events over time
- Frequent arguments over small occurrences in daily life
- Trust issues due to partner's past or history
- Lack of emotional intimacy leading to distance
- Cultural and social differences (different lifestyles growing up)
- External pressure from work and lack of work-life balance
How to De-stress
- Communicate! Is there stress trickling over or building up that originated somewhere else?
- Think about what role you want this relationship to play in your life, whether it's familial, romantic, friendship, etc.
- Put yourself in the other person's shoes. How do your actions appear in their eyes? What may they be going through that adds to this relationship stress?
- If need be, take a break, and be careful of exchanging words when high on emotions. Have a cup of tea or listen to music if anyone needs to cool down before talking.
- It is crucial to remember every relationship has its rough patches. Being patient and learning how to communicate is the key to a healthy relationship, regardless of whether it is a partner, friend, or family member. However, in certain situations, it is extremely important to reach out and seek help as soon as possible.
